sunset in Nikiti

Apart from the numerous beaches and the varied picturesque landscape changing from granite to pines and sea, also the fragrant pine forest will invite the visitor to take a stroll on the heights east of the old village, perhaps searching for fossil findings of mastodons, rhinoceruses and other extinct species. (which can be found by trained eyes)
Nikiti is divided into 2 parts, one being the old village extending to the hills with the old Makedonean architecture, the other part kown as new village, going down to the sea with all the tourist development. Here the village still grows with new shops and houses being constructed.

Architecture

Old village

House in old village

The local architecture of Nikiti constitutes partly of Northern Hellenic architecture. The houses of old local builders are very impressive with their clear and beautyful constructions, the clever use of materials and the wisely operated structure of spaces. Interesting themes are for instance the various knockers ("krikeles" ) at the doors, or the fireplaces with their chimneys. This architecture survived the destruction of the village shortly after the Greek uprising against the turkish occupation in 1821. The positions of the houses within their neighbourhood were chosen according to the below listed laws of the ancient architect Hippodamos :

Additionally every house had it's own garden and storage place. Today some old houses exist at the old part of Nikiti and at the old market. During the las years "Nikiti fans" from Greece and different European countries have bought many abandoned houses and restore them carefully keeping the traditional fassade. Nowadays the traditional market takes place every Friday, in the roads near the central square and bus stop.

Old buildings and churches

For the fans of antique buildings, the following sights are worth a visit:

  • The early Christian basilica of Sofroniou at St. George. Excavation is in progress, and so far has revealed a marvelous mosaic floor and impressive carved marble decoration (5th cent.).
A little to the east lie the ruins of a second basilica of the 5th century, on top of which stands the old chapel of Agios Giorgos (St. George 18th cent.). The church service here on the saint's feast day (23. April) is worth attending.
  • An interesting provincial basilica (5th cent.) as the early Christian church in Elia.
  • Only parts of the church of the Virgin Maria in the village cemetery still exist, with wall paintings from the end of the 16th century.
  • The church of the patron saint St. Nikitas in the old village. Built in 1867, rebuilt 1949, with fine icons by the well-known painter George Paralis and a small collection of 17th century icons.
  • The tower of 19th century windmills

Archaeological sites and sights

Church St.George

Chapel of St.George

For visitors who want to go further back in history they are also interesting archaeological sights to see:

  • For instance the ancient city of Olynthos 30km from Nikiti. It was destroyed by king Philippos II in 348 B.C. Today some of the best mosaics of Greece can be seen there.
  • The Museums and archaeological sites of Makedonia.
  • The limestone cave of Petralona with stalactites and stalagmites (60Km from Nikiti village), with the finding of the first white European man called Archanthropos and other interesting findings of Petralona
  • The ancient doric temple of Ammon Zeus in Kalithea of Kassandra, destroyed probably 3rd century B.C.

For nature lovers

olivesThe virgin forest between Olympiada - Neochori (in north east Halkidiki). This forest is like forests of North Europe. In this area grow many medicinal herbs and aromatic plants (850 different plants have been specified , among which 238 are medicinal - aromatic). This forst is also home of many wild animals.

olivesHave a referential audience with Itamos, the oldest tree of Greece, who lives on top of Dragoudeli mountain (Itamos mountain) and by the way is not an olive tree but a yew tree. He is more than 2000years old, though his age does not show at first sight. On the era of Alexander the Great, Itamos was a very young tree and surely you will feel very young after this visit...
